Germany is known for its extremely progressive environmental policies. But as Matthew Karnitschnig points out in a recent piece for Politico,

There’s just one problem: The price of going green keeps rising. No one knows for sure how much rewiring Europe’s economic engine will cost in the end, just that it will be a fortune.

Karntischnig goes into great detail about Germany’s Energiewende (the shift from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy) and the moral imperative to do something about climate change that has influenced the thinking of all of Germany’s major political parties.
